Surrender

So, I'd say most of us have read our first pick. I think it might be best to just leave the first one as a blog discussion book...how about deciding on a deadline for the next book, and pick the next one!!

My vote is for the book that is being read on the adbooks listserve for June1-June 15: SURRENDER by Sonya Hartnett. Check out this book...see what you think and propose a book YOU want to read next!!!

Adbooks is so up with the new books that we could take a few hints from them (though they are late with reading THE BOOK THIEF for the last half of June). If you haven't signed up for the listserve, it would behoove you do so, then you could contribute to this blog and that group as well! Two birds with one stone, I say. (Alright, I haven't contributed to Adbooks yet...give me time.)

That's MY idea for a book. Also, I think we should opt for a deadline now, decide a time and a place, so that people like me can get the night off! How about the Monday after Father's Day...June 19th? I'm open for suggestions for meeting places and times.

Well, off to finish my book for class tonight...

Hmm...what to do?

What should we do, oh silent crowd?

Should we forgo the first meeting and pick another book, or should we meet?

I really feel like I'm talking to myself these days, but that's okay... I'm getting good at it, apparently.

Oh yeah, in the time that I've been waiting for responses, I finished Donnelly's book, read Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging, and started the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud...absolutely LOVE these books! Like Harry Potter? Very similar, but different! Beautiful, huh?

Have something to say? Want to be a part of it all? Having a great, fun-filled summer? Or just bored out of your skull?

CONTRIBUTE, POR FAVOR!!!

What about...

What about a change of plans? How about if the Binghamtonians meet separate from those in Syracuse? (At least for the first meeting...) I'm available to meet this Saturday, about 6ish at B&N in Vestal...

About the book...
Just finished it. Loved it mostly, especially Mattie's voice as the book progresses. Though I was hoping for more details on the murder, I thought it was a great backdrop for Mattie's eventual independence. Wonder what became of her in N.Y., and of Weaver, and her family. Think Royal married Martha? Hmm...just pondering.

Sorry if you read this, and haven't finished the book, but it IS about time to discuss it!

Would YA's like this book, you think? The narrator's voice is great and there are amazingly vivid details as well...but what about the story? Is it accessible or is that limited because of the generation gaps? I think the humor and the narrator are the reader's "in" to the book...

What do YOU think?

Dawn

About the book...

What do you think of the book??!

AND, should we arrange for another time to meet? Input would be very nice!

Book Chats

Hey Dawn

I probably won't make the Cortland meetings--I work until 3:15 ish Monday through Friday and pick up my daughter from track practice at 4:45ish. I'll see you in Binghamton.

HEY!

What happened to the enthusiasm? True, you do not need to be committed for every book, but it would be nice to see a good gathering for the first and most important meeting, right?

Keep reading and posting!

Dawn

Sounds Good

But not for me. Think I'll pass on this Thursday, especially because I just returned "A Northern Light." I read about 40 pages and realized, "It's summer! The last thing I need to do is force myself to read a y.a. book that is not speaking to me!" I already did that with, yawn, Code Talkers and, snore, Criss Cross.

But I think ya'll should meet if only to start establishing a pattern, etc.

let me know how it/if it goes.

Chris

When to meet...

Alrighty, I've been avoiding my computer for the past few days, so I guess I should probably make up for lost time.

Since some of us are headed the Cortland way Thursday night for our first class, I was thinking that the first meeting could happen then. Perhaps, instead of meeting at a bar before class (that could be detrimental to my study habits), we could just meet at the Dragon's Den again...maybe 4:30-ish, since our class is at 5:30 (I think)...unless y'all want more than an hour.

Please blog about this so we can figure out who will be attending!!!!

Off to work again...

So? What's the plan?

Dawn et al,

I think our fearless leader, that's you Dawn, should pick a time and a place. I'm sure not all of us will be able to attend, but that's a-okay. Attendance is not a requirement of the course.

What say you, fearless leader?

Hi All....
I'm joining into the mess if only to add more complications.

I guess my big concern is what to put in the folder for KES... j/p

Um... I lean towards Cortland or even, gasp, Ithaca.

If the 25th is the start of people's summer school endeavor, why don't we meet an hour before the class starts?

Recap

For all of you who missed our little meeting, we decided to read Donnelly's A Northern Light. Deadline? Not sure yet, but we'll think of one.

Another thing we discussed is where we're going to meet...Laura suggested changing the name of the club from S.B.C. (Summer Book Club) to S.B.C./D.C. (Summer Book CLub/Drinking Club). So, the idea is that we meet at a bar someplace to talk. Not a bad idea.

So, where are we going to meet? The idea is that we alternate every two weeks between Cortland and Vestal, and maybe Syracuse (but it had better be a really great bar...I mean book that week).

Who decides where we meet? YOU do! So get your ideas out there! Someone suggested themed drinks...

TWO WEEKS is Thursday May 25, but for some of us, that is the start of our summer school endeavor. WE NEED TO PICK A DAY! (and I need to get it off from work!)

Ramblings and such....
Enjoy the sun!

Let's MEET!

Alrighty, all! (Is anyone out there?!?)

It would be a GREAT idea to get together before summer classes drag me down even further, and the rest of you all get on with your free time (not jealous or anything...grr.)

So, I will be at the Dragon's Den at 6 pm (since 619 starts at 6:30 this week), and if ANY of you want to join me, that's great. If no one shows up to argue a title with me, or to discuss when we're meeting after this point, then we will read Donnelly's A Northern Light. Have it read in two weeks...and we'll meet to discuss it. (and to pick our next great read!)

JOIN ME: Thursday, May 11 @ 6pm!
See you then!

(Maybe we'll decide to meet in Vestal, or in Cortland, to appease Jack ;) !!!)
We'll see!

Later,
Dawn

Fight for the book you want to read first!

Hey all,

This is it: you need to persuade us which book we should read first! Some of us talked tonight (Tue) about reading Jennifer Donnelly's A Northern Light. If you want to read it, let us know!

I also was thinking that we should plan a time to meet and decide how we're going to run this thing...I was thinking we could meet Thu May 11, at 6:30 or 6:45 in the Dragon's Den...how does this sound to everyone? That way we could decide what book to read, the meeting place and time, and how to pick the next book...

Problems? Questions? Concerns?

Let us know!

Dawn

I checked out the reviews for the titles that Dawn has thrown out. All but Suzanne Fisher Staples "Under the Persimmon Tree" are for ages 9 - 12. Staples book is recommended for ages 12 and up. I couldn't view the excerpt at Amazon but could at the 4cls website (4 county library system). It sounds very interesting, particularly because the content about the Taliban is so current. I think this book is fine for our first one. (And the jacket is very appealing to the eye with its bright colors).
